TerraVerdae BioWorks Awarded Support Grant by UK Regional Growth Fund for Applied Industrial R&D Centre for Performance Biopolymers and Biomaterials
EDMONTON, Alberta and WILTON, UK
TerraVerdae BioWorks, an industrial biotechnology company developing advanced bioplastics and environmentally sustainable biomaterials, today announced the award of a £3.25 million ($5.2 million) grant by the UK Regional Growth Fund (RGF) to support its Applied Industrial Research and Development Centre.
The focus of the Centre is to enhance innovation and market uptake for advanced biobased and biodegradable polymers produced from waste-derived and sustainable feedstocks. This project is supported through TerraVerdae’s collaboration with The Centre for Process Innovation (CPI) and Intertek Measurement Science Group (MSG).
The TerraVerdae Applied Industrial Research and Development Centre is focused on creating co- development partnerships with customers and key industrial collaborators. The Centre will help accelerate TerraVerdae’s go-to-market strategy by providing unique capabilities and resources to address key technical challenges in the development, characterization, and commercialization of next generation biocomposite polymers, biomaterials, and performance bioplastics.
“We are very excited about the opportunity to establish this hub of excellence as a key addition to our global capabilities in advanced performance biobased material development and production. It provides us with a unique opportunity to tap into the rich history of polymer development in the North East of England,” said William Bardosh, CEO of TerraVerdae. “It also strengthens our capabilities and development offering for global collaborations and positions us strongly, with a perfect entry into the rapidly-expanding European market.”
Nigel Perry, CEO of CPI said, “We are absolutely delighted to be working in partnership with TerraVerdae. This combination of RGF and private sector investment is a great example of CPI engaging with industry to create new world class infrastructure and green technology jobs that will position the North East economy as a global centre of sustainable innovation.”
This award supports TerraVerdae’s vision of producing sustainable high performance bioplastics integrated with conventional and nano materials to create advanced biocomposites and bioalloys. In the rapidly growing market (30% CAGR) for bioengineered polymers, the commercial development and deployment of TerraVerdae’s next generation biobased materials provide key economic, resource security, and environmental benefits. Biodegradable plastic production from waste creates a unique cradle-to-cradle value proposition for landfill waste, biomass residues, and industrial wastes.
The Centre for Process Innovation (CPI) is a national technology innovation centre offering market and technology expertise along with cutting-edge development assets to help its public and private sector clients build and prototype the next generation of products, processes and services quickly and efficiently, and with minimal risk.
